I did take note of them balking at the question, seems to me like the best ECONOMIC plan would be to do both, that way you can make a tour a rock record while working on another family, etc. Keeps money coming in a touring different venues for different audiences. More material for more people in the marketplace. Rock doesn't have to be a young man's game, Neil Young can still rock it. And their rock shows prove they still can do it with the best of them! Let's hope they do decide to rock again!

I am looking forward to Brian's next CD most of all.
I certainly hope they get a rock record together sometime soon. Funny thing that is in the interview where he said that quote, he mentions Neil Young.

Hello kids, goodbye rock...

Good news for those who loved the Family Album, it looks like they're may many more on the way before (if ever) another rock album comes.

At the 2:14 mark of this interview with Brian & Donny at Lollapalooza/Kidzapalooza 2010 you'll hear the interviewer ask if there were plans to record more rock albums or stick with a kids theme and BVA's reply was:

"I think we'll have more kids records for sure. I'm not sure about the rock records..."

Personally, I was hoping that the bands' excitement with the kids music would have worn off 6 months after the album was release, but I guess that's not quite happening anytime soon, if at all.

In the immortal words of Bob Mould "[Rock] is a young man's game..."
It would be really cool to hang around on Sunday to see Soundgarden, that would be quite the trip down memory lane! It stinks that so many of these overlap, if you stay for a complete set in one place you miss the start of another or you have to choose between Arcade Fire whom I've never seen or Soundgarden who I haven't seen live in 17 years!
i'm probably going to see all of Soundgarden. Arcade Fire just doesn't appeal to me. Many other bands that are popular with that crowd, I just don't really get into (the national, animal collective, hockey...). I'm glad that they generally do a good job with scheduling.

I'm hoping for some good rock acts on Sat night, that way I'll catch the kids show Sat, hopefully some good acts that night and then stay for the show on Sun aft before hightailing it home after that.

A little early, but always good to develop a plan to rock!
Now that the schedule is released, it's time to talk about The Verve Pipe playing the Kids stage at this years Lollapalooza. Not only are they playing, they're play both Saturday & Sunday.

Louisville 5/21 setlist and notes

Checked out another great VP show in Louisville, Ky friday night. Probably one of the most fun shows I've ever seen. Setlist was as follows:
Worrisome One
All of You
Photograph
Complimentary Love
Hero
What You Wanted
Never Let You Down
Cereal
Spoonful of Sugar
Villains
Colorful
Suppertime
Take the Long Way Home
Cup of Tea
The Freshmen
--break/Griff jam--
Happiness Is

Notes: The guys really cut loose tonight. Crowd was small but pretty much into it. Same set as Nashville the night before. BVA mistakenly introduced Wake Up when it was time for Cereal, and after a brief discussion and a few blank stares, a superfan in the crowd shouted out a request for "Cereal" and BVA said "yeah yeah, we'll play that one." pretty funny. on one of the songs(maybe spoonful?) BVA joined Donny behind the drum kit and they were both playing drums! Pretty cool! Played around with a bunch of covers, including parts of the YOungbloods "Get Together" sung by Donny, and Van Halen's Aint Talking Bout Love on banjo by Lou. funny stuff! After 20 years, 3 recorded versions, and thousands of live performances, they once again found a way to make "the Freshmen"...fresh, when they invited the crowd onstage for an impromptu sing-along. Very cool moment. I've counted myself among the skeptics of any "new" version of this band, but I'll be damned if they didn't blow me away on this mini tour. Now I find myself really hoping this group of guys sticks around for a while.

yes, that is indeed me in the pic. thanks for the kind words todd. i do enjoy writing the self important scholarly reviews. now for the "fan review." fun time, great show. this was actually the first time i've gone to a verve pipe show that did not feature at least 4/5 of the "classic" lineup. and i must say i was really impressed with this version of the band. vocally stronger than ever, with frequent use of 4 and 5 part harmonies. they all sound great on the mic. lou is solid on lead, i can honestly say the only time i missed a.j. was on the solo in villains that he just owns. but lou's awesome, and a super nice guy. crowd was pretty good. small venue, so not a lot of people there, but they were attentive and pretty much knew their stuff. one guy shouted for cereal and they obliged, kicking wake up off the set list. TVP is just a damn good band, and it's depressing as hell that our bullshit musical landscape ignores talent like this.

Nashville review 5-20-2010

It felt like 1996 all over again when near the middle of their set at 3rd and Lindsley in Nashville Thursday night, a Verve Pipe fan shouted out ?Cup of f***ing Tea!? This good natured request for a song off the band?s multi-platinum breakthrough album, Villains, put the already loose frontman Brian Vander Ark in an even happier mood as he declared it the ?best shout out ever.? Indeed, while the demeanor of the band was much looser than the angst ridden post grunge days of the mid-90?s, the musicianship and cohesion of this version of The Verve Pipe was as tight as we?ve ever seen as they ripped through a 90 minute crowd pleasing set of familiar favorites and tunes from their recently released A Family Album.

The show began with a near a capella rendition of ?Worrisome One,? a track from the new record arranged into a beautiful 5 part harmony that showcased the vocal strength of literally every member of the band, and segued nicely into the mid-tempo love song ?All of You,? pulled from the 2001 Adam Schlesinger produced Underneath. If there were any doubts that the kinder, gentler Verve Pipe could still bring the rock, those thoughts were quickly erased when they launched into ?Photograph,? the semi-hit that first garnered them mainstream attention. From the opening keyboard riff provided by Randy Sly to the crunching dissonant guitar chords of Lou Musa, the Verve Pipe proved that a decade out of the spotlight and exploration into family friendly material has done nothing to dull their edge.

The set continued with a sampling of selections ranging from rarities like Pop Smear?s ?What You Wanted,? to live staples like ?Spoonful of Sugar? and ?Villains,? to BVA?s surprisingly earnest homage to his favorite breakfast food, ?Cereal.? Along the way The Verve Pipe sprinkled in such shoulda-been-hits as ?Hero,? from the much maligned self-titled follow up to Villains, and ?Colorful,? a beautifully crafted acoustic ballad that originally appeared on the soundtrack to the underwhelming Mark Wahlberg/Jennifer Aniston vehicle Rock Star. The appreciative crowd stayed enthusiastic as they built to a crescendo of Supertramp?s ?Take the Long Way Home,? the aforementioned request ?Cup of Tea? and finally the inescapable #1 from the 90?s, ?The Freshmen.? After a brief instrumental interlude featuring harmonica maestro Craig "Griff" Griffith, the band closed the evening with "Happiness Is," a brilliantly catchy pop song penned by drummer and songwriter Donny Brown.

Some bands taste success and spend the rest of their career trying to replicate the formula that brought them there. Some bands taste success and spend the rest of their career living in the past. The Verve Pipe long ago slipped out of the mainstream pop culture consciousness and are now merely vaguely familiar to most, but they have always maintained the artistic integrity that got our attention in the first place. They have never allowed any industry institution to dictate their musical direction, and they most assuredly are not a nostalgia act. The Verve Pipe gave the diehards in Nashville a musical journey through their past and a glimpse into their future. And while their status as MTV ?flavor of the week? is now a distant memory, the aftertaste is especially satisfying?no need for a spoonful of sugar to wash it down.

RE: Austin City Limits!!
I would say its pretty cool that TVP is on this festival. I was checking out the ACL website, and they have a neat little feature where you can make a list of your customized lineup, i.e., what bands you're planning to see. As of now, over 1100 people have added TVP to their list. By comparison, the Eagles only have 3158. So its neat that a lot of people are excited to see them again. Although I'm guessing half of that 1100 probably think they're going to hear "Bittersweet Symphony." :D
I hope people aren't too dissapointed if it's just a Kids set. I know BVA twittered about TVP playing both Kidzapalooza and Austin Kiddie Limits.

I'm still hoping for both a rock show and a kids set at Lollapalooza. At the very least, maybe an official Lolla afterparty show would be nice.
